Description

This promotional lithograph for the Oriental Powder Company was produced by J. H. Bufford Lithograph in Boston. The Oriental Powder Company, based in Boston, owned the Oriental Powder Mills along the Presumpscot River in South Windham, which produced 25 percent of the Union gunpowder during the Civil War. The mills drew employees from both Gorham and Windham, which sit on opposite sides of the river. The lithograph depicts the mill works and various offices, canal boats, powder wagons, the speed of cannon balls, ducking powder, and diamond grain (gunpowder).
